Do you sometimes fail to do what you truly intend to do?
If so, you’re hardly alone. For most of us, there’s a sizable gap between what we intend to do and what we actually do. Unfortunately, that gap can have devastating effects on our health, our finances, our career and even our relationships.
But what causes us to do such a lousy job of following through on our own good intentions? Is it really just a matter of character?
You’ll be surprised – perhaps pleasantly – by the answer offered by clinical psychologist, Dr. Steve Levinson, in a free seventeen minute long web presentation provocatively entitled Why the Human Mind Should Be Recalled: Exploring the Great Disconnect Between Intention and Action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2IcPIJRU7c
“In a very real sense, we’re not to blame for the fact that so many of our good intentions bite the dust,” says Levinson. ”The real culprit is a flaw in the very design of the human mind.”
That’s right, Levinson insists that the mind itself is an obstacle to follow through.
Levinson, didn’t just jump to this startling conclusion. Hardly. He’s already spent over two decades trying to make sense of why we often do such a lousy job of following through on our own good intentions.
Levinson, who teamed up in the 1990′s with colleague Pete Greider to write the critically-acclaimed book Following Through, has been trying for years to place the problem of poor follow through on society’s radar screen.
“Poor follow through is a menace that can rob us of success in virtually any area of life,” says Levinson. “Yet, amazingly, it’s a problem that society largely ignores.”
In his web presentation, Levinson does more than just take society to task for failing to treat poor follow through as the menace it truly is. He shows how understanding the true root cause of poor follow can lead to some bold and rather provocative ways to narrow the gap between our good intentions and our actions.
