You have to research the site carefully before bidding, because there are many penny auctions that are absolutely fraudulent (whether it’s membership fees or someone bouncing up the price of their items). However, from what I’ve read, there are also some that are legitimate.

My New Hobby – Quilling (or Paper Filigree)

Quilling has been a ‘ladies art’ around since the Renaissance. It was originally a favorite for women in convents (back then, women might retire to a convent, or be forced to retire to a convent without becoming nuns). Through the ages it has been the province of women, and thought to be ‘non-taxing’ for ‘inferior brains.’ It was largely practiced by ‘upper-class women’ or ‘women of leisure.’

Help for Sexual Assault and Rape Survivors in Chisago County: 1.800.338.SAFE

After some digging around, I was able to find a wonderful crisis center to help domestic violence and those in need of help in the area, called the Refuge Network. Their phone number is: 1.800.338.SAFE (7233). They’re mission is to: “provide supportive services for people who are currently involved or have been involved in an abusive relationship. The Refuge Network believes that no one deserves to be abused and therefore seeks to bring an end to domestic violence.” They provide a haven for up to 15 women and children, and by calling them, you can get access to other helpful services.

The firefighters are out in force ringing bells at the Lindstrom Grocery Store with a beautiful golden retriever, and my fiance’s cousin Bob Adams, who is blind, and a very sweet man, was also out in the cold ringing bells to raise money for one of his favorite charities, the Salvation Army.
